Cigars 101
Use the right clippers. Good cigars have a piece of tobacco leaf at the head that needs to be clipped, so you can expose more of the surface area. Cheap clippers will crush or tatter the cap of your cigar. If you’re inexperienced, get a good guillotine cutter and line it up at eye level. Then, make a quick and decisive cut.

Lighting your cigar is half the fun. Revel in the ritual of lighting a cigar. If you use a match, let the sulfur burn off before you light your cigar. (It’s not a cigarette, you know!) Aficionados love to light their cigars this way to avoid bitter tastes from bad lighters. Experts recommend using a butane lighter if you must use an automatic lighter, since gasoline lighters can give your wonderful cigar a foul odor.

It’s all in the roll. Aficionados start the process by “preheating” the foot. Slowly roll the cigar just above the flame, but never let it touch the flame. Once you see a small black ring forming all the way around the wrapper, you can put the cigar in your mouth. Keep rolling the cigar just above the flame as you slowly draw in breath. You’ll notice the flame leap to meet the tobacco.

Inspect your work. Look at the glowing cigar to make sure you’ve established an even burn. You can gently blow across one end of the foot to spread the burn out, if it needs it. Wait another minute or so for the burn to even itself out before taking a puff.

Share your experience. Cigar aficionados love to keep a journal of their favorite smokes. If you keep smoking cigars after the bachelor party, it’s a great way to share a connection with friends and business colleagues.
