5 Tips for Negotiating with a Jeweler

Set a budget, and stick to it!
How much can you really afford to spend? Whether you plan on financing the engagement ring or buying it with cash, determine how much you can really spend on the purchase. Once you’ve decided on your budget, do not let a salesperson talk you into raising it. If you feel as though you cannot get the quality diamond you’d like in your price range, you may need to reassess either your budget or your requirements away from the pressure of the sales staff.

Leave the Bride at Home.
If your bride is looking longingly at the ring of her dreams, the jeweler knows he has you both hooked. To negotiate effectively, the jeweler or salesperson must believe that you can walk away from the ring without hesitation. Appearing unemotional about the purchase is often easier when the bride is not present.

Don’t Fall for Games.
“One day only” sales are only a sales tactic, used to pressure people into buying immediately instead of thinking about their purchase. Don’t be fooled by this gimmick. The day after a “one day only” sale, you’ll find that prices have not changed much.
