Groom's Guide to Renting a Tuxedo

Check out your options, in person. Bring your photos to the top two or three shops that your friends recommended. If you’re getting married in some far-flung locale, it’s still better to rent your tux locally and bring it on the plane. You can’t guarantee that a shop at your destination will be able to accommodate you. Check out the shop itself – are the owners friendly? Do they seem to care about you and your special day? Ask to see some suits from their collection. Are they in good shape, or do they look like they have seen one prom too many?

Wait until you’re the right weight. When you find a tuxedo rental shop that can provide you with the suit you want on your specific wedding date, put down a deposit immediately. However, hold off on taking your exact measurements for any custom tailoring until as close as possible to your wedding as your tailor’s schedule will allow. Because traditional tuxedo pants do not have belt loops, you’ll want to make sure they fit you well on the day. If you’re planning on slimming down or bulking up for the wedding, you could find yourself totally out of proportion.

Pick up your tux – in advance. Even if it costs you a few more dollars, pick up your tuxedo a few days before your wedding. Your bride will need your help, your attention, and your love in the days before the event. Get your errands out of the way so you can be there for her.

Keep it clean. If you’re planning on any reception tomfoolery, stash the jacket somewhere safe. You won’t want to blow any of your wedding money on buying a stained suit from your tuxedo rental shop.

Get it home on time. Respect your tailor’s business and get the tuxedo back to them in time for them to alter it for another customer. Depending on where you rent, you may or may not have to clean your suit before returning it. Check your receipt to be clear about your obligations.
