Hawaii on a Budget: 10 Great Ideas

Stay away from the ocean. It may be lovely to enjoy a room by the sea, but Hawaiian room rates plummet as you get farther away from the beach. If you don’t mind a brisk walk every day, you can hang on to your cash.

Clip coupons. You can pre-order the Hawaii Entertainment Book (http://www.entertainment.com) for only thirty bucks. Plan out your meals with their two-for-one specials at fine restaurants, and you’ll make your money back at least tenfold.

Picnic. Enjoy some romantic lunchtime and sunset picnics. Hawaiian sandwich shops often drop their prices after the lunch rush, so you can grab a bag and dine in find surroundings for only a few bucks.

Eat ethnic. While other tourist flock to the same American chain restaurants you’d find back home, save some money by visiting some of Hawaii’s excellent ethnic eateries. Enjoy authentic meals by Chinese, Laotian, and Vietnamese chefs for a fraction of the cost of the platter at Ruby Tuesday.

Befriend the concierge. If you stay at a hotel, choose one that includes tours and activities with your room rate. Many hotels on Maui take guests on whale watching and other nature trips at no extra charge. Your concierge might even give you complimentary tickets for other local events.

Hula! You don’t have to pay to get into a tourist trap restaurant to enjoy a traditional Hawaiian hula dance. Kuhio Beach in Waikiki hosts free hula shows every day at 6:30, with huge dance troupes performing on weekends.
